we talked about getting away
living a glorious life on the road
a single suitcase shared
we couldn’t need much more
to find the freedom we idolized
we stopped at abandoned gas stations
small towns and rv parks
we passed through open empty fields
cities that scraped the sky
we rolled the windows down
turned the music up
leaned our heads out the window
took big gulps off air
just to taste the freedom we idolized
we kept driving
unaware if we were searching for a destination
or a feeling
we weren’t concerned with departures or arrivals
content with the in between moments
the closest we’d get
to the freedom we idolized
